Introduction to Dental Implants
Dental implants are changing the way people live. They are designed to provide a foundation for replacement teeth that look, feel, and function like natural teeth. After dental implant reconstruction, the patient who has lost teeth regains the ability to eat virtually anything, and knows the teeth appear natural and that facial contours will be preserved. Patients with dental implants can smile with confidence.
What are Dental Implants?
The dental implants themselves are small titanium screws that are surgically placed into the jawbone where teeth are missing. These metal anchors act as tooth root replacements. The bone fuses with the titanium, creating a strong foundation for artificial teeth. Small posts that protrude through the gums are then attached to the dental implant. These posts provide stable anchors for artificial replacement teeth.
Implants also help preserve facial structure, preventing bone deterioration that occurs when teeth are missing.
The Surgical Procedure
For most patients, the placement of dental implants involves two surgical procedures. First, dental implants are placed within your jawbone. For the first three to six months following surgery, the dental implants are beneath the surface of the gums gradually fusing with the bone. You should be able to wear temporary teeth and eat a soft diet during this time. At the same time, your dentist is making your new permanent teeth.
After the dental implant has fused to the bone, the second phase begins. Dr. Swiderski will uncover the dental implant and attach small posts that protrude through the gums and will act as anchors for the replacement teeth. When the replacement teeth are placed, these posts will not be seen. The entire procedure usually takes four to eight months. Most patients experience minimal disruption in their daily life.
Surgical Advances
Using the most recent advances in dental implant technology, Dr. Swiderski is able to place single stage dental implants. These dental implants do not require a second procedure to uncover them, but do require a minimum of six weeks of healing time before replacement teeth are placed.
There are even situations where the dental implants can be placed at the same time as a tooth extraction further minimizing the number of surgical procedures. Advances in dental implant technology have made it possible, in select cases, to extract teeth and place dental implants with crowns at one visit.
Implants are a team effort between an oral and maxillofacial surgeon and a restorative dentist. While Dr. Swiderski performs the actual implant surgery, initial tooth extractions, and bone grafting if necessary, the restorative dentist (Dr. Swiderski) fits and makes the teeth. He will also make any temporary teeth needed during the implant process.
What Types of Replacement Teeth are Available?
A single dental crown is used to replace one missing tooth. Each replacement tooth attaches to its own dental implant. A bridge can replace two or more teeth and may require only two or three dental implants. A complete fixed bridge replaces all the teeth in your upper or lower jaw.
The number of dental implants varies depending upon which type of replacement teeth (removable or fixed) is recommended. A removable over denture attaches to a bar or ball-in-socket attachments, whereas fixed replacement teeth are permanent and removable only by the dentist.
Dr. Swiderski performs in-office implant surgery in a hospital-style operating suite, thus optimizing the level of sterility. Inpatient hospital implant surgery is for patients who have special medical or anesthetic needs or for those who need extensive bone grafting from the jaw, hip, or tibia.
Why Dental Implants?
Once you learn about dental implants, you finally realize there is a way to improve your life. When you lose several teeth-whether its a new situation or something you have lived with for years-chances are you have never become fully accustomed to losing such a vital part of yourself.
Dental implants can be your doorway to renewed self-confidence and peace of mind.
A Swedish scientist and orthopedic surgeon, Dr. Per-Ingvar Branemark, developed this concept for natural tooth replacement more than 35 years ago. With his pioneering research, Dr. Branemark opened the door to a lifetime of renewed comfort and self-confidence for millions of individuals facing the frustration and embarrassment of tooth loss.
Why Select Dental Implants over more Traditional Types of Restorations?
There are several reasons: Why sacrifice the structure of surrounding good teeth to bridge a space? In addition, removing a denture or a partial at night may be inconvenient, not to mention that dentures that slip can be uncomfortable and rather embarrassing.
Are You a Candidate for Implants?
If you are considering dental implants, your mouth must be examined thoroughly and your medical and dental history reviewed. If you mouth is not ideal for dental implants, ways of improving it, such as bone grafting, may be recommended.
What Type of Anesthesia is Used?
The majority of dental implants and bone grafts can be performed in the office under local anesthesia, with, or without general anesthesia.
Do Implants need Special Care?
Once the implants are in place, they will serve you well for many years if you take care of them and keep your mouth healthy. This means taking the time for good oral hygiene (brushing and flossing) and keeping regular appointments with your dental specialists.

It is my belief that Dr. Swiderski is absolutely the best in Salem. I've been going to Dr. Swiderski for dental implants and a tongue biopsy. I am not the best patient when it comes to pain, etc., but with Dr. Swiderski, I experienced no pain and very little discomfort. Dr Swiderski and his staff are so skilled at what they do I actually leave his office smiling! I would recommend the services of Dr. Swiderski to anyone who may need his expertise of services. I'm still making visits to Dr. Swiderski's office to finish up my implants and now I look forward to each visit. Dr. Swiderski is very skilled at what he does, he's also very patient and kind. What I think is icing on the cake is that he makes his own phone checkups with his patients, not asking one of his assistants to do this.

I hadn't seen a dentist or doctor in around 11 years but from the first phone call and appointment with Dr. Swiderski's office I felt comfortable and safe, not only with his office staff, but with him and the procedure that needed done. I really never expected to be needing my teeth cut out of my gums and drilled just for this procedure as I thought in time they would grow out, so when they didn't I was terrified that I needed such an invasive procedure. After a lot of childhood trauma in medical settings, it was no easier preparing myself for surgery until I encountered Dr Swiderski and his team. I've never felt safer or more cared for by medical professionals and for once in my life I didn't even feel the needle for general anesthesia as it went in thanks to the ethyl chloride spray! I have a lot of phobias, but this team made them easy to face. I wish I could go back to this team for every medical procedure I ever needed, so I can say without a doubt if I do ever need any oral surgery again this would be the place I come to. I never even felt a thing until I was taking ibuprofen to ease the swelling 5 hours after the surgery once feeling finally returned and I could swallow properly. I've never encountered anyone better and I always, rather embarrassingly, brag about it to my friends who need this procedure, right before I recommend his team. If you're gonna go anywhere go with these guys! They'll not only make you feel safe and comfortable, even when you have a lot of questions, but they'll make the procedure seem easy in all their experience. I never had a serious problem when all was said and done, yet they still let me come in just for a checkup a week later. They answered all my questions without making me feel ashamed and best of all they did an amazing job!!

I'm only ever here when I have something catastrophic going on with my teeth (stating the obvious), and this last time it was a very infected tooth where the infection was taking out bone, affecting my sinuses, etc. I was a mess, because my teeth hate me. Dr. Swiderski told me that TWO teeth needed to be pulled, because the one next to Bad Tooth was loose (fine, just a little) and the infection had basically caused too much bone loss. As is my way, I tried to air a grievance about this, noting that my Googling was surely as good as Dr. Swiderski's several advanced degrees and his prestigious residency at the Mayo Clinic. Perhaps not surprisingly, I was shot down, albeit nicely considering I was of course talking nonsense. All of the assistants are wonderful too, as I kept warning them that "I'm a baby about this stuff" and "it takes a lot of novocaine to work" and making the sad face of dread. Oh, and the x-ray apparatus they have is very high-tech! Regular plates hurt my mouth because I have mandibular tori (which I didn't even know weren't normal until I was an adult), but here they have a whirring machine that rotates and magically takes x-rays. So, the point. This was a complicated dental surgery because so much of the bone was eaten away and it involved two teeth and I'm a wimp about anything dental-related....but I'll have to go back for follow up and probably bone grafting, and I actually don't dread it. That's how nice everyone there is, and how hard they work to make sure this is as pain-free as possible, so much unlike the root canal sadistic nightmares of my youth. It's also nice of Dr. Swiderski to check in the evening of surgery to make sure we're doing okay. Overall, if you need dental surgery, I highly recommend Dr. Swiderski and crew!
